Body: Please light a candle!

Today, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical monolith that charges nearly $1,000 for a 30 day supply of one of its HIV/AIDS medications, is donating $1 to the National AIDS Fund for each person who simply visits their website and "virtually lights a candle." The tally is over 800,000 now.

Please, please take a minute to "light a candle":

www.lighttounite.org

This really will take just a second!! :) Please forward this on to other friends!

P.S. Please, take a few seconds to repost this so that the word can get out to as many people as possible. Thank You!

... to be in on the arguments that seem to always make andy leave the band? wtf goes on in those meetings??????

nick: "andy, you need to wear more make-up"
andy: "sod off you fucking cow, i'm not painting my face up like bloody liza minelli so i can wind up looking like you, you great poofter!"
john: "come on now boys, that's no way to talk..."
roger: "yeah, come on, i'm feeling extra sensitive today... don't make me freak out and quit too!"
simon: "oh shut the hell up and let's play 'girls on film', better yet, let's watch the night version of the video... we should do a remake of that... maybe we can get belladonna or jenna jameson to be in this version and i can shag 'em!"
andy: "you are the perviest old man in the world, lebon! fuck it, i'm outta here - call warren cuccurullo!"
john: "good job, nick, now have to go back to the lame 90's lineup where we couldn't get arrested to save our lives"
nick: "come to think of it you could all use more makeup... come on over to the house tonight and i'll do makeovers on everybody with my new borghese stuff i got at the mall yesterday while shopping with my daughter"
simon: "oh bloody hell, nick, you never slept with that great tart julieanne and you know it, you only like boys!"
john: "oh here we go again..."

You might have seen this band when they were touring & opening for Duran Duran a little over a year ago... they have a really early-80s new-wave-pop kind of sound, but I think they're all about eighteen or nineteen... just young'uns.

They're playing the following dates:

Saturday June 24th at the Crash Club (seems like some sort of a fashion event? There are playboy models and go-go dancers... that's about all I know about it)

Sunday June 25th at SF LGBT Pride - Main Stage 4:55PM (right after Lisa Lisa)

If you want to check out their music first: www.clearstaticmusic.com or www.myspace.com/clearstatic

Here's the site for CRASH: www.crashnightclub.com/

Thanks!

Club GOSSIP
Street date September 10, Saturday
An 80's New Wave Nightclub for dancing and your entertainment
At the Cat Club, every second Saturday in San Francisco

This month, a tribute to more than a man, or just a symbol, but both! Whatever you may call him, can we suggest 'Purple one', Prince has left his indelible mark on the music landscape. From his really early funky-pop, to the more slick and cohesive '1999' and the musical spectacular of his 'Purple Rain' era majesty, what really seemed to confuse folks was the name change to a symbol, 'the artist formerly known as prince' became the proper way to refer to the man now that his name was an unpronounceable symbol. It just left many of us bemused, did it not?

Join us as we try to make sense of it all, come down and enjoy the music videos we like to play for you, and yes, there will be a heavier dose of Prince videos than usual. We've been busy shopping for even MORE VIDEOS than before, and we're spending too much time watching them at home. We can hardly wait to share them with you all. Be sure to check out all the DJ's this month, all are really talented in their own way, I think it's our best lineup yet, we are confident you will agree.

Saturday September 10th
The DJ lineup this month is...
DJ Damon from 1984
DJ Melting Girl from Death Guild
DJ Low Life from New Wave City
DJ SHON from Heavy Petting

80's, New Wave, Nu New Wave in two rooms
Music videos in the back, Visuals in the front
Visual stimulation by Channel One

The band re-convened this week in the Studio in London, picking up where they left off. They are still writing and working on new material, as well as finishing up some of the music they started in San Francisco. They are hoping for a summer release and plan to work nearly every day until the album is finished.

Electro featuring 'Serious'

'Fire' is his first new production in 18 months, and it's been well worth the wait. Known as the pioneer of trance music, Ferry's looked back for inspiration and turned it on its head, given it a hefty dose of electronic fizzle, and sent it out onto the dancefloor. He's taken Simon Le Bon's vocal, and the melody/riff from Duran Duran's 'Serious', first released in 1990 and worked it into a whirring, anthemic slice of synth-infused electro-house.

The recent chorus that met a handful of 'Fire' promos got tongues wagging, and DJs hunting for copies, some even charting it without actually having had one - that goes some way in telling you how big this record is going to be. Already a favourite on Radio 1's dance shows, it's being hammered across the UK, Europe, America, and beyond - this is truly global dance music.

To hear a sample of this track you can visit the Positiva Records where you can also pre-order the digital download. The video, which features original footage of Simon from the promo for "Serious" that has been added to MTV Dance can also be viewed here too.

Rare Duran Videos (nightboat, Careless Mems etc)

I found a page with tons of old music videos. Most require quicktime and I find some of the links don't work, but there are a few Duran ones including the rarely seen "Careless Memories"..actually it's kind of a sucky vid. The disco version of "My own Way" is there too.

This past weekend I spent quite a bit of time deciding what Duran Duran songs I wanted to put on a single disc.

Here is what I came up with:

1. Out Of My Mind (Perfecto Mix)
2. I Believe/ All I Need To Know
3. Secret Oktober
4. The Seventh Stranger (Live)
5. The Chauffeur (Acoustic Version)
6. We Need You
7. The Crystal Ship
8. Land
9. Fame
10. Winter Marches On
11. Come Undone (La Fin de Siecle)
12. Femme Fatale
13. Ordinary World
14. Drive By
15. Perfect Day
16. The Krush Brothers LSD Edit
17. Someone Else Not Me
18. Missing

Most of these songs are B-sides and minor hits, but I've heard the popular songs a million times.

"I Believe/ All I Need To Know" is one of my favorite DD songs and nobody else seems to have heard it.

hey. I always thought double D were under rated as musicians. and the Burning the Ground mega mix of theirs is hands down one of the greatest achievements in remixing to this day. I also have on double vynly a DJ only megamix of every single off the Notorious with seperate remixes of the singles themselves. can anyone please tell me how rare /how many copies of this was pressed and released??? and besides SAY GOODBYE,what other songs were released off of SO RED THE ROSE,the odd spin off group ARCADIA's album? thanks!!!
Row M

These were the best we could get via internet immediately at regular sale time on Saturday.

On Sunday monrning my friend picked up two tickets in 102-O.

I just checked now and tried to get 1 single ticket and the best they had was the very back of the arena in Section 108. Looks like DC will sell out.

Powerstation album being Re-released

The first Powerstation album is truly amazing. The sound is already so big and full I can't wait to hear the remastered version. Plus a DVD just makes it all the better!

Here's the press release...

Powerstation CD and DVD Release
EMI RECORDS NEW RELEASE THE POWER STATION
CD & DVD
Release Date: 21st February 2005

‘We were kings of the world, notwithstanding the huge hangovers. We were 23 and we were playing with the big boys at The Power Station.’
JOHN TAYLOR 2004

What happened when Duran Duran met Chic and Robert Palmer?

EMI are delighted to announce the release of a new edition of the debut album by THE POWER STATION, to celebrate – remarkably – its 20th Anniversary. It’s big, bright, bold, daft, flamboyant and fun. It’s the sound of the 80s meeting rock of the 70s and the soul of the 60s. Few records have ever sounded quite so ferocious and, well, very, very loud. It’s a souvenir from an era when pop stars believed in dressing up rather than dressing down.

By 1984, the wheels had momentarily fallen off the Duran Duran juggernaut. From nought to worldwide success in less than four years, the band, like many others before them, found that it had all gotten a bit too much for them and the members needed some time apart. Had it been a decade earlier, the group would have all made solo albums about mystical hermits. But John Taylor was far too smart for that. These were new times. As the original synthesiser of punk and funk within Duran, he capitalised on a happy accident and masterminded one of the most successful albums of 1985.

THE POWER STATION was not originally going to be either a band or an album. Taylor knew he wanted to record with Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and make a version of T. Rex’s “Get It On”. After original vocalist Bebe Buell dropped out, he, Thompson, and his Duran cohort Andy Taylor sought a new singer. But they were now at a level where a small ad in Melody Maker would simply not suffice. They considered a revolving door policy with frontmen until partying acquaintance Robert Palmer arrived. His experience and musical erudition were warmly welcomed to the proceedings. “Get It On” was duly recorded with producer Bernard Edwards, then looking to equal his ex-Chic partner Nile Rodgers production triumphs with David Bowie and Madonna. From its spontaneous creation, the working arrangement gelled, and an album quickly followed.

As Taylor had learned to play bass a handful of years earlier to Chic’s Good Times, here he was, playing with that record’s drummer and being produced by the person who played the original part. The surprise and joy of John and Andy Taylor recording with their heroes at the New York studio which was to give the group its name courses deeply through the groove. Andy Taylor was unfettered and splashed his big rock guitar across the recording, creating a big, bright urban sound that was both of its time, yet strangely timeless.

Using every trick in the book to capture Thompson’s massive drums (including recording them down lift-shafts), their debut single, “Some Like It Hot”, a mêlée of bubbling horns and clipped guitar, shot to No. 12 in the UK and No. 6 in America. The seven other cuts, a mixture of originals and covers, helped the album reach the Top 20 both sides of the Atlantic.

In addition, there are now seven bonus tracks, including the Michael Des Barres-voiced “Someday, Somehow, Someone's Gotta Pay” from the Arnold Schwarzenegger action pic Commando, appearing for the first time on a Power Station album, as well as a plethora of mixes that filled the ever-burgeoning single formats of the time.

And on top of all that, to complete this deluxe Power Station experience, the DVD features: the band in behind the scenes studio footage, interviews, the videos to ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Get It On’ along with a bonus live version of ‘Some Like It Hot’ from Saturday Night Live, the only existing live footage of the band from that era performing with Robert Palmer.

Today, unbelievably, Palmer, Thompson and Edwards are no longer with us, while John and Andy Taylor are once again conquering the world with the reformed Duran Duran. Hear what they did on their holidays all those years ago, and whatever you do, play it loud.

THE POWER STATION remains a perfect testament to the giddiness of the time.
it was hard to hear from where i was all that he said, but some started to boo.... the rest of the night was fine, but i think some people actually left!
it was right when they stated What happens Tomorrow....

I went to San Diego radio station 94.1's Underground Lounge with Duran Duran this afternoon and got the nerve to bring out my flute when they started 'Save A Prayer'. My husband, Marc, raised his hand when they started, but I made him put it down and quietly got out my flute. The look on their faces when they heard me play Nick's keyboard riff was priceless!! Simon waved me up on stage and I stood next to John. I was nervous, but it was really fun. They let me say a few words on the radio. I'll put the website link as soon as the radio station puts it up!

The concert is at 8 tonight!!!!!!

Oh and they played:

Whatever Happens Tomorrow
Save a Prayer
and Astronaut!!!!

First of all, I'm sooooooo glad I got to go and didnt have to sell my tix. The guys had a lot of energy, and Simon can still move those hips like a sexy mofo!

The crowd was a little lame, at least around me it was, there was no room to dance. :O( I saw a lot more youngish kids there than I thought there'd be, that was cool to see the music transcending generations.

I liked the opening band a lot, the crowd was really rude to them. When they said they were playing one more song the crowd cheered so loud. (I never did catch their name though..)

overall, glad to see the Fab 5 still have it!

Sadly my father passed away yesterday morning, peacefully and painlessly. He had been very ill for some time, so eventually he did not have the strength to keep fighting. He was the kind of father you would have wanted and the kind of father you would like to be yourself, unconditional and selfless with his affection & love.

Without his support & encouragement I don't think I would have had quite the same luck in life. It wasn't easy dreaming of being a pop star in 1974, but he allowed me to believe it was possible to make those dreams come true. He was very proud, as you can imagine, of all five of us. We are a big family of 25 years, so you can imagine his joy when we recently played in Newcastle to 10,000 mad geordies - I think it was one of the proudest days of his life...to see us back together, better than ever and all of us so happy to be there.

So I would simply like to thank a few people...

Firstly the hospital team, Ward 7, North Tyneside General, lead by the exceptional Mr Liam Horgan, one of the finest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. His staff and the nurses on the ward are a truly motivated set of people: they do this day-in day-out - a vocational devotion And those lovely geordie girls that were with him till the end, all I can say is thank you to each and every one of you for all the care that you gave him.

To all the other Doctors and nurses, specialists and surgeons, you did all you could and through that you gave us five more cherished years.

My brother for being stronger than I ever realised, and keeping me in touch throughout this emotional roller-coaster.

And finally my mother, Sandra, who cared for my dad everyday, whatever the weather, she never gave up right till the bitter end.

Rest in peace dad.

I may have to sell my tickets for the Wilkes-Barre show. I will know in the next few days.
Does anyone know where I could sell them, I'd rather not go the E-Bay route. I'm only looking to get back what I paid, not make $, etc.

Of if anyone here is interested, let me know.

Denver Set

Here's the list of their set in Denver a couple of nights ago, at the Magnus Arena in DU (not a big auditorium, but was perfect for the feel of their concert).

SUNRISE
WANT YOU MORE
HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF
A VIEW TO A KILL
NICE
WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW
COME UNDONE --- this is where they broke into the "chill" songs
ASTRONAUT
THE CHAUFFEUR --- Simon looked mighty yummy in his chauffeur's cap and black sequined shirt moving in a slinky fashion
ORDINARY WORLD
SAVE A PRAYER
BEDROOM TOYS --- picked up the beat again
NOTORIOUS
PLANET EARTH
REFLEX --- crowd went nuts
CARELESS MEMORIES --- loved the Japanimation on the big screens
WILD BOYS

GIRLS ON FILM --- he stopped halfway through and introduced the band, climbed into the audience and had a fan introduce him, very endearing.... he really tore this song apart, I loved it!
RIO

I wished they would've done White Lines, but they didn't. Not sure Rio was the right song to end it on, but now that I know what the song is about (supposedly it's about their journey to America) it makes more sense to end on that one.

I had such a great time!!!! We had fantastic seats (4th row, off to the side... right next to the left stage). Sang like no other and danced even harder. Such great energy. Andy didn't make it, his father got sick so he had to catch a flight out and was replaced w/ another young English kid, Dominique, who did a great job. John was a bit slow the whole night and not very enthusiastic. But Simon made up for it.... he looked better than ever (noticed he lost some weight, especially when he flashed his belly twice), and hit EVERY note.

All in all a very memorable performance.
PINWORMS CONCERT REVIEW, DD IN LA

Okay, I have always been a Duranie. Yep. I can say it without shame. I am what you call a "Hardcore Duranie"..this doesn't mean I hang out near the stage door or name puppies after the band or scream or dress like them. It just means that after the pinacle of their popularity in 1986, I have continued to buy their albums and attend their shows in the ensuing 20 years. I know the obscure songs. I know the songs that were not the hits. Shit, 1990's "Liberty" album is one of my favs. And 2002's "Pop Trash"

I couldn't give a flying fuck about their image...their videos...their playboy lifestyle. I liked the music, pure and simple. It started out as an interesting blend of rock and disco which NOBODY was doing in 1978. Screaming guitars backed by newfangled sequencers..groundbreaking. That's the core of Durans success..they never settled for a single sound like other long term bands such as "The Cure" or "Depeche Mode". Each project was a new venture for THEM. Besides, Roger kicks ass as a drummer.

On Feb 26, I went to see them play at Staples Center in Los Angeles
on their "Astronaut" World Tour, although some are calling it the "Reunion Tour" because they have gotten together in their original line up, dumping the very talented Warren Cuccorullo and bringing back Roger and Andy and the recently quit and returned John.

A Duran show has very distinct audience types. You have those on a Nostalgia Trip who only remember the 80's hits, those fanatics who follow them around on tour, and, when Duran has a strong single out as they do now and did in 93 with "Ordinary World", the teeny boppers show up. I cannot tell you how often I have been at a Duran show and heard "I don't know this one" followed by the sound of people sitting back down again. This was clearly the case at this show. For the most part, Duran Duran cannot escape their own success to become more than a novelty. But I admire them for trying.

For a few years there, they were pissy about it. I remember seeing them in 93 in Toronto when they had serious chart succes with their "Duranduran" album from the power of "Ordinary World", "Come Undone" and "Too Much Information" following 3 good-but-commercially-sunk albums over 7 years. Simon Le Bon, obviously DRUNK, screamed at us: "Where were you 4 years ago????". What an asshole. Since then, they seem to have come to terms with it and the fact that SOME albums get them to fill Wembly Arena 5 nights in a row, and SOME albums get them to maybe fill a smaller venue like "the House of Blues" or the "Warehouse". They have come full circle, realizing the power of nostalgia and reuniting in their pinacle lineup.

So..the show....Well, the place was full..perhaps 30,000 people. There was a shitty opening band that sounded like a cross between Bauhaus and Green Day, but less cool. The singer thought he was Peter Murphy.

Duran Duran, true to the spirit of showiness, made a dark and foreboding entrance by walking to the end of the stage in dark suits like something out of a Kraftwerk fashion show. The opened with "Reach Up for the Sunrise" the current single and in my opinon, total shit on an otherwise good record..designed to be a single and you can tell. The audience was loud for this, but it was the opening number and we were exited.

They didn't wait long to satiate the thrist for nostalgia by going right into the bubbly sequencer intro to "Hungry Like The Wolf"..a very sexual song with distinct musical phrases that increase tension and provide sudden realease..no wonder it was huge in 82. From this right into "Planet Earth".

The show slowed a bit and became ballad-heavy when it went into a string of slower tunes..a few of which became "time to go get a beer" interludes. A slow song from the new album which I forget ,

"Come Undone"..a ballad...
"Ordinary World"...a ballad, and Simon hit a bad note...might be time to put the high octive songs on the shelf.
"What Happens Tomorrow"...a NEW ballad..good one, but god, lets get some TEMPO in here!
"Save a Prayer"..the sequence clip seemed to be cut a half a beat short..drove me nuts.
"Tiger Tiger"..this was an insturmental number from "Seven and the Ragged Tiger"..I wondered why they did it. Apparently it was for a costume change so Simon could put on a chaffeurs uniform for what came next: "The Chauffer"..this vid was banned from MTV back in the day..unlike "Girls On Film" it had no TV friendly version.

After this the gloves were off. It fucking rocked out suddenly with a fast, screaming guitar version of "Careless Memories" followed by a heavy version of "I don't Want Your Love"...an odd choice, althouh it was cool they were going to do post fab-five songs that weren't megahits.

"Union of the Snake", always an up song
"Astronaut"..danceable new one
"Nice" a new one
"Notorious"...my fav. Political, funky, and ALWAYS good live because the audience screams the "No No" parts like sheep They really should have done "Skin Trade" from that album too like they did on the "Pop Trash" tour.
"I want You More!"..a synthed up dance tune. Also new.
"Wild Boys"..I hate the song, but most like it.
"The Reflex"...this is a MUST DO song. It's required at every Duran Duran show and I haven't seen them do a show without it, same with "Girls On Film".

There were 3 encores, starting with "White Lines", the 1995 hit of their Grand Master Flash cover..probably did this for the benefit of the LA audience..we like cocaine and all. It was pretty good and the song has interesting offbeat structures and vocal parts.
This was followed by "Girls On Film"...the famous shutter-click intro making people scream, although it lacked the neat synth part...for those really into Duran minutae, it was the "all night" version. Girls On Film is one of those songs that everyone waits for, and the audience probably demanded an encore just to get to hear it.
They finished it out with "Rio"...a good song, but probably a weak encore.

I was disappointed by the production qualites of the show. There is no reason the hi-hat should be louder than the lead guitar..especially during guitar driven songs like "The Reflex". The drums and bass occasionally covered out everything, including the singer. Nicks synth parts..the important ones..like in "Careless Memories" and "Girls on Film" were too muted.

On the upside, million watt strobe lights hooked up to Rogers drum pads was genius. There were 5 narrow screens behind the band showing various images..no more lighted sculptures like they used to do.

I must admit, he's cleaned up his act rather well, I seem to remember him being a bit of a queerbag. A dingy one at that..

photos from my performance with Simon, Andy and John

http://www.my941.com/jacor-common/globalphotos.html?eventID=28291&pagecontent=

so, those of you who haven't heard the story.....

Marc(my husband) told me about an auction for tickets to attend
San Diego radio station 94.1's Underground Lounge with
Simon LeBon and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, for which
was a benefit for the Children's Hospital. I won one
pair of 7 to attend the concert. Since we couldn't
take photos, I decided to take my flute.

When the radio station called to give me the details,
the promotions manager told me that the special guest
was John Taylor and that was a great surprise.

After over an hour waiting in the station's lobby, the
guys showed up and sound checked. We were allowed in
and Marc and I sat in the middle of the crowd. They
played 'What Happens Tomorrow' and seemed to be having
a good time. I knew when Simon reached for the
acoustic guitar behind him, that 'Save A Prayer' was
next. Marc raised his hand, but they couldn't see him
because of the stage lights. I made him put his hand
down. I carefully put my flute together and quietly
tuned during the first part of the song. When they
got to the chorus, I started playing Nick's synth
line. The look on their faces was priceless! They
could not find the source of the song until the
station's camera guy took a photo of me. (shot 11)
Simon then waved me up on stage and I played out the
rest of the tune with them. After it was over, John
asked 'Who the hell are you?!?' and Simon said 'We
have our own James Galway in the studio, although a
heck of alot better looking.' I got to say a few
words and then they went to the next tune.

We taped the performance off the radio, and although
you can't hear my flute on the recording, they didn't
take the comments out of the airing. I hope to edit
that soon and make an MP3 out of it.

It was totally cool!!!

A local radio station 94.1 had an auction for tickets to see S,A and J in their underground lounge tomorrow before their show here in San Diego tomorrow. We can't take cameras, but I'm taking my flute in hopes they'll let me play 'Save a Prayer' with them.

I'm so excited- my husband laughs at me. (not quite as exciting as our wedding!)

Dallas show review

Hi Fellow D2 tribers,

Thought I'd share my take on the Dallas show...

I'll start off by saying "Welcome Back Fab Five"! It's great to have you back! It was quite exciting to see the original lineup after 20+ years. They still look fabulous in person. They started the show off with "Sunrise", and then launched into an oldie, but a goodie, "Hungry Like The Wolf". From then on it was a mix of new and old songs. They seemed to be having fun. The audience was having fun. They sounded pretty good for the most part. However, there were a few sound glitches that they were trying to work out. Simon seemed a little less energetic than I've seen him. Perhaps he was feeling under the weather because he kept going to Roger's drum platform to drink out of one cup, and spit into another. He still did get off a few kicks and leaps from the drum platform. Honestly, I thought he was either going to hurt himself or split his trousers! Hehe! There was a part during "Careless Memories" where Simon didn't sing a few of the words, so I have no idea what that was about. Nick looked great playing his keyboards, and pouting. Roger was keeping the beat. John was gettin' funky with his bass. The person who stood out for me, was Andy. He was playing his heart out. That was great! My only disappointment was actually the pacing of the set list. They played "Tiger, Tiger", "The Chauffeur", "Ordinary World", and "Save a Prayer" all back to back, which for me was kinda weird pacing. I would've been really thrilled if they had done the set list from the Houston show which included Nightboat. Ah, se la vie! Oh, their live version encore of "White Lines" kicked ass!

I did buy the Pop-up book/program. It's pretty cool, and in my opinion the most unique item that they're selling at the concessions booth. It's $45, and yeah a little pricey, but I like it. I guess I'll have to get a bigger shrine. Hehe! It was really great to see them live! All in all, I had a great time at the show.

I'm sure our fearless moderator Stephanie will post a review of her own as I know she went to the Dallas show as well. Here's the set list from Dallas:

Review of Ft. Lauderdale Show

The show was absolutely fantastic. I am still so psyched about it the next morning. They played a great song list. For the precise list, see the topic on the Ft. Laud pre-show list b/c that is exactly the songs they played in the exact order.

The show was close to 2.5 hours - they sounded great, Simon Le Bon looked great and he was also very funny when speaking. I don't know if this was planned, but when they started play astronaut, about two lines in, Simon started shouting "Stop stop" and it took a moment for the band to figure out what was going on and stop and than Simon said, "this is only one of two songs I play guitar for during the whole show and I am not plugged in properly." Turns out he was plugged in the wrong whole, so then he responded. "Where have I heard that before" and "This explains why I am the singer." It was very cute, be it staged or improv. Then they started the song over. I would be interested in knowing if that happens again in the next shows - e.g. accident or staged.

All in all, amazing experience and I envy those of you who still have it to look forward to. I would go again in a heartbeat!

Roger injured! Japan tour postponed

Following last Thursday night’s UK Duran Duran concert, the band today
announced, with much regret, that they have been instructed to postpone
their upcoming Japanese tour to allow drummer Roger Taylor to recover
from a foot injury that he sustained in December 2004.

Taylor had broken the fifth Metatarsal bone in his right ‘bass drum’
foot late last year, when he was in the United States and had been
ordered to rest for several weeks. Following doctor’s orders, the drummer’s
first show after the accident was on Thursday evening (January 13th) at
London’s Hammersmith Palais (this was an intimate show that was being
taped for broadcast on UK radio later this month). The following day,
Taylor’s foot was severely swollen and painful and after a medical
examination today, Roger was told that unless he rested the foot for an
additional period of time he could risk serious long-term damage.

The band were slated to kick off their ‘Astronaut World Tour’ on
January 22nd at the NK Hall in Tokyo. Two additional Tokyo Budokan arena
dates, and three regional shows would have followed, ending on January
29th in Fukuoka. The tour would have marked the second time that the five
original members of Duran Duran had played in Japan since reforming to
make a new album (‘Astronaut’) earlier last year.

The specialist is confident that if Roger does not perform or undertake
any prolonged physical exercise for the next few weeks, he will be able
to resume playing in time for the 45 stop US tour, scheduled to start
mid-February.

Speaking today from London, Roger said “We are all really upset about
this and more than anything, hate to disappoint everyone that had bought
tickets to see us play. I know that fans were traveling from all over
the world to be at the opening of the tour in Japan – and I can only
apologize that this injury has caused us to postpone the dates until the
summer.’

Refunds for all tickets bought will be available with immediate affect
from the place of purchase. Duran Duran hope to return to Japanese
shores some time later this year and are working to reschedule as soon as
possible. More details to be announced shortly.

Refunds will be issued to all Fans that purchased VIP Packages for the
Japan tour and they will be given priority when the tour is
rescheduled.

Hi all. I bought tickets for the San Diego date and I will say that I am disappointed. I don't know how many seats they had saved for Tier 1, but even right after the sale started, there were only single seats left in that part. The interface was also problematic- it took me the 5 minutes to delete Tier 1 and get my Tier 2 tickets.

I thought that's what the $35 membership fee was for!!!

It's good to have tickets, though!

DD at the Pond in Anaheim

Hi all,

Anyone else on this tribe go to the Star 98 Not So Silent Night Concert in Anaheim on Monday night? DD came on last but they were fantastic and worth the wait. As a previous thread mentioned, Andy was not there but I think they still rocked.

The other performers were Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Alannis Morisset, and John Mayer. They played good sets also but the sound was kinda screwed up in the first half which seemed to be fixed by the time DD came on.

Here are some pics from the Star 98 website: http://www.star987.com/jacor-common/globalphotos.html?eventID=27675&pagecontent=nssn

They played "Reach Up for the Sunrise" "Bedroom Toys" "What Happens Tomorrow" from Astronaut and the classics, including "Rio" "The Reflex" "Notorious" and "Hungry Like the Wolf." "Girls on Film" was the encore.

Sigh. DD will always be my favorite band.

I'm looking for help with the pre-sale.

You see, thanks to a hiccup in my banking (checks didn't post in the optimal order) I didn't have the $35 to join the fan club in time to participate in the pre-sale, but I *do* have the money *today* to be buying tix, *sigh*

I'm looking for someone, ANYONE, in the fan club who is willing to pick me up one ticket for the March 2nd San Jose show. I'll paypal you half the cost when you make the purchase, and the rest (including shipping) when the ticket arrives in my hot little hands (sorry not to offer the entire amount up-front, but I've been burned by scam-artists).

Could anyone help me? Pretty please? Drop me a line at my tribe addy if you can give me a hand.

Thanks!
New Live CD/DVD Announced!

To celebrate their tremendous success in the live arena, in spring '05, a live DVD/CD package will be released that was shot at the band's final London Wembley Arena concert in May 2004. The show - which broke the house record for attendance - was one of 17 sold out arena shows in the UK. Accompanied by a live CD from the same show, the DVD will include Duran Duran's classic hits plus material from Astronaut, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. The DVD/CD was produced by Coming Home Studios and will be distributed in the U.S. through Rounder/Zoe.

Like the new album, but...

I have weird mixed feelings about the new album. Ever since I got it something about it has been bugging me. I have always remained a fan, but my favorite stuff was always Notorious and earlier. Obviously a lot changed after Roger and Andy left. But things (for me at least) really started to go kinda downhill after NOTORIOUS.
BIG THING had some great tracks, but there are a few others that I just have a hard time listening to.
LIBERTY I've always had issues with. I think overall it's a pretty mediocre album.
WEDDING ALBUM I always liked for the most part. But this is where I think the sound of the band really started to change a lot.
MEDAZZALAND was a real dissapointment with the exception of a few songs.
POP TRASH is well... Bands shouldn't use the word "Trash" in their album titles. I think it jinxes them. (ie: Thompson Twins - BIG TRASH) Yuck!

The first bit of the new album I ever heard was the small loop of "Nice" the band put on the front page of their website a few years back. When I heard that snippet I was absolutely floored. I would re-load the web page over and over again listening and thinking "If the rest of the album sounds like this I am gonna be in heaven." Then the release date started bouncing around and the band kept going in for more recording sessions. That's when I started to worry. (Actually, my first worry was that they had lost touch with reality when they hired Nile Rogers to produce the new record. But that's a story for a whole other story/thread.) I feel like something happened or that some song ideas were left over from previous writing before the original 5 got back together.
Some of the songs sound so like old Duran. But a lot of this new album reminds me of stuff from TWA and later. I've spent the last two days listening to a mix of Duran through the years on my iPod. It was bugging me that something was missing from most of the new songs. At first I thought it was Simon's vocals. His singing style changed a little I think. I don't think it's bad now- just different. But finally this afternoon it hit me... It's John's bass lines. John writes bass lines like no one else I can think of. Other than Simon's voice, John's bass lines are the easiest method to identify a Duran song if you didn't already know who it was. Roger was always my favorite member and I think he's a great drummer, but I don't think anyone can listen to a song and say "That's Roger playing drums!" Or "That sounds like a Nick Rhodes synth line".

Is any of this making sense? Is anyone with me? Have I pissed everyone off by dissing POP TRASH?
Please don't get upset. More than any other band that I know- Duran fans take the most offense at people making comments about the band or their music if it strays at all from "It's so amazing!". I haven't seen it on Tribe yet, but I've seen it plenty of other places. So just relax. I'm interested in hearing what others think. Prove my ideas wrong.

Andy Out Until Next Year

From DD.com:

Andy Taylor Update

Following a week spent at home in bed early last month suffering from exhaustion, guitarist Andy Taylor has been taken ill again and won't be able to resume work with Duran Duran until the New Year, when the band plan to embark on a 2005 world tour, that will kick off in Japan in late January.

Whilst Andy's condition remains without a specific diagnosis, doctors have said that he will make a complete recovery as long as he rests for the next few weeks.

Fellow band members, Nick, Simon, John and Roger, will continue with all planned live dates and promotional activities with a stand-in guitarist until Andy returns.

-------------------------

I wonder who the stand-in will be?

Hi All,

God, I hope this hasn't been a past topic. I looked through the old post, and didn't see one...So...

We talk a lot about the music. D2 were some of the early pioneers of music videos when MTV came about...

So, what's your fave D2 video? Mine is Rio.

Fire away! :)

Mine is Bedroom Toys, so far. It's the most unique, it has a really funky flow and it's got a great sense of humour in the lyrics.

Nick's keyboards

Anyone ever seen a list of the keybaords Nick has used over the years? I only know a few.

Fairlight CMI series III
Sequential Circuits Prophet 5
Ensoniq TS10
Ensoniq VFX
Roland SH-2
Roland Jupiter-4
Roland Jupiter-6
Roland Jupiter-8
Roland S-50
Roland Juno-60
Roland D-50
Kurzweil K2000
Yamaha CS-40m

Current stuff I've noticed--
Roland Jupiter 8
Roland V-Synth
Kurzweil (looks like a large K series)
Korg microKORG
Alesis A6 Andromeda

He has a Fairlight in the "Reach Up For The Sunrise" video, but I don't imagine he still uses it much.

so I finally got to watch the DVD the other night, and I LOVE IT! I just have to say, I LOVE NICK! he is so fierce! First when he shows up at Wembley with his Vogue shopping bag, then when he complains about not having decent wine glasses backstage, and finally when he talks about how this was the first time EVER he's worn blue jeans on stage! he's SO class!!!

I got the new one today! I'm about half way through and it sounds like they let everyone be themselves. By that I mean, that they let Andy rock out, John be funky, Roger hold the beat down, Nick provide the spacey stuff and Simon sings his heart out.

I look forward to seeing them in concert!

Unfortunately last time they came through I could not afford to go (even tried to win tiks from local station). I was hoping they'd come again.
