I was there last night and i am not sure if Simon realized that Va was dominent-ly Republican state.....
when he started to speak of the president.
it was hard to hear from where i was all that he said, but some started to boo.... the rest of the night was fine, but i think some people actually left!
it was right when they stated What happens Tomorrow....
was anyone else there?

  • Wow,
    That sounds truly pathetic.
I mean, what kind of mixed-up republican winds up at a Duran Duran concert, only to be surprised that they aren't republican??
Maybe I'm crazy, but last I checked, D-D was never exactly the model of american masculine conservatism.
In fact they looked like girls. That's why I liked them.

Maybe Duran Duran should do "Save a Prayer" with images of Terri Schiavo, the pope and f-16 jet fighters flying over the US flag with GW Bush's face superimposed over the band with jesus hanging above??!!??!!

Wow- there are some unbelievably retarded people in this country.
I really wish they would just hurry up with their damn apocolypse and die.

Sorry they soiled your experience. I'll save a prayer for you.

hey there.... that is not the point ...or maybe i am not getting yours since i was 1/2 asleep writing that....
i am not of the republican clan... and no they did not ruin it for me... (i guess you meant the republicans?)
Duran Duran has changed quite a bit over the years... Simon and Roger have both become more vocal and involved in matters... i read this morning that they were at the white House earlier yesterday before they performed...and that would have probably put me into wanting to speak my mind...
the point of my post was to see if anyone else who was there actually could hear all that simon said.
      • Just to throw in my 2 cents....I don't think he was saying YOU were Republican, I think he was making a more general statement about Republicans going to a DD concert and then being offended and walking out-LAME.
        • Thanks Dina,
You are correct to assume that I am no way attacking Lilou here at all.
I was merely expressing my continued grave intolerance for the retarded media mezmerized mongoloids who walk (and vote) among us. Especially when they get all chirpy at a Duran Duran concert.

However strange, and though I am not surprised by their white house visit, I can't help but feel that Simon did so with the fantasy that he was some sort of dignified ambassador to the pop music world with the power to persuade the authorities with his charasmatic charm and elusive metaphor.
          Tee-hee.... ;)

Sorry for any miscommunique, Miss Lilou.

PS: Am I the only one here who gets a perverted thrill out of talking politics on a Duran Duran board?
          • Unsu...

            its ok...
i was not looking at it that way... the one thing when typing vs hearing the spoken word of another is interpretation of tone... and with the lack of sleep... i just couldn't figure out what you were trying to say...
and with Simon... one never knows what goes on in that brain....
if only i could have heard what he said to cause the boo-ing... oh well..
i guess it doesn't really matter... the show was the best...the crowd was far better in Philly than in Va... but what can one expect from that state....
            ciao :*
            • Hey now! I live in Fairfax! Fairfax City (where the show was) is a nice place. I'm not a Republican.

The fact is that I've never viewed Duran Duran as a political band and I was disappointed in hearing him even say that. It was hardly even a political statement. It was almost as an aside to the sappy story he was telling to intro the song. I came to hear Duran Duran play the music I love- not for Simon to give me a political lecture.
          • sometimes Simon just needs to keep his mouth shut, I often wonder what the hell he's saying! haha

hey you got some pretty surreal pics on your profile! Simon and Gus Van Sant? NICK?? wow!
            • I wasn't gonna just come out swinging with those pics, but yeah, it was a pretty surreal weekend.
And Simon was the only one who wasn't a totally genuine nice guy. Just as I would have figured. But hey, he's Simon F-ing Lebon.
He refused a photo-op the night of the showand if it weren't for Nick being a tipsy little shutterbug the following night, I wouldn't have even snapped what little I have.
Luckily our host never let Simon take himself TOO seriously.

Aw christ- should I just give up the full report already?
              • YES FULL REPORT! what was the party for? how were you there? DETAILS! Yeah Simon does come across as being a bit of an ass sometimes, I see you got the same impression. Nick and John and Roger always seemed like the sweeties.
                • I started writing a response, but it was just so sickeningly name-droppy, I couldn't go on.

The jist in a nutshell is this.
My brother once played guitar in a project with John Taylor. He put us on the list for the PDX show. We became aqquainted with Andy Taylor backstage as well as Nick Rhodes' five foot cube road case full of $200 bottles of wine.
The same brother used to play in a band with Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols, so we ended up at their studio the following night for an after dinner party and more $200 bottles of wine. Nick got tipsy and started snapping pics which broke the ice so I could snap a few. He was a really super nice guy. Andy was also super cool.
Simon believed himself to be super nifty, but Courtney wouldn't let him take himself too seriously at any given point. Court ended up having some pretty hilarious jokes at Simon's expense thoughout the night actually.

At any rate, for fear of nauseating anyone anymore than I already have, I'll just leave it at this.
If you really, really want to hear more, more, more then I will certainly oblige. I just didn't want to come off as some sort of gloating bastard about the whole thing.
Well, maybe just a little gloaty, but not any more than necessary.
                  ;)

It was extremely fun because they were fun. Even Simon despite his twittiness.
Oh and Roger, was exactly what I had expected him to be, the quiet nice guy. He was just such a wallflower that I didn't have all that much interaction with him, but yeah, also really cool. We saw John briefly the night of the show, but he politely split as he doesn't go for the party scene.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
wow that sounds truly amazing! Don't worry, you weren't gloating at all....but if you were I wouldn't blame you! feel free to share more, or you can PM me.... out of curiosity.....a friend of mine works at one of the makeup counters at Nordstrom in Portland, and also does some freelance makeup jobs on the side. She had to do makeup for the Dandy's for some photo shoot, and she said Courtney was THE biggest asshole she'd ever met (but the rest of the band were super nice.)....do you agree? perhaps he and Simon each gave the other a run for their money!
                    • Perhaps this was the case... But the funny thing about Courtney, (as I can't say I've known Simon for any more than twenty minutes) is that he has ALWAYS been the way he is today. People always think he just *boom* one day turned into this arrogant, self-indulgent, rock star/primadonna, and I can only say "hey, he was every bit the same jackass when he was tearing tickets as a doorman for six bucks an hour." In fact I would even wager to say that he was actually mean spirited THEN more than now, because he was impoverished and miserable.
I would tell you that the Court I know is a gregarious, wealthy goof-ball, but then I've known him forever AND I'm not a woman,
So... everyone has a different experience.

I just know that he was on a serious NERD HIGH the night that Duran Duran was in HIS studio. I think they quite feared him actually, in a cult leader/stalker sort of way by the end of the night.
I'll tell you some more on PM, I feel like such dumbass here.
                      • hmmmm interesting! well thanks for all the stories. I don't care if Courtney's an asshole primadonna (the last time I saw them they played for THREE HOURS straight with no opening band, kind of a good indicator! hahaha) or not, I still love the Dandy Warhols! I'd be on a nerd high or whatever high too if I had DD in my studio, house, anywhere!!! damn!

Have you seen Dig! ?? LOVE it.
  • I was there. That was the first time I've ever heard Duran Duran get seriously booed.

Simon's an idiot. I was stunned he said something like that. He should have known better than to say anything like that in this area. What he said was "Back in 2001 when your lovely president started dropping bombs on Baghdad..." and then the booing began.

Not only is Northern VA a very Republican area a good portion of DC and the surrounding area works for or is contracted by the US government.

To be honest that whole show sucked compared to when I saw them in DC last year. They played well, but the sound wasn't great and got worse later on in the night. None of the guys really seemed to be into it. I think the novelty has worn off for them. Obviously it's hard to tell with Nick or Roger because they're tethered to their areas. But Andy was the only one who really moved around much.

    • Disappointing to hear all this. Perhaps they were getting a bit worn out a this stage of their tour. When I saw them, they were fairly into it, energetic, workin' the crowd, and Simon didn't make a single political blurb. Too bad about the whole thing.
  • Does this set list jive with what you remember?

Duran Duran set list from Fairfax, VA (DC) April 8th 2005:

    REACH UP FOR THE SUNRISE

HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF (Anyone else tired of the "Is anybody hungry" comment?)

    PLANET EARTH

HOLD BACK THE RAIN (Always nice to hear this song)

    ASTRONAUT

I DON'T WANT YOUR LOVE (For the first minute of this song I didn't even know what this was. Worst song of the night. Horrible arrangement.)

    WE ARE FAMILY (ugh!)

    COME UNDONE

    Simon's political commentary/Intro to WHT

    WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW

TIGER TIGER (When I saw this on other set lists I though it would be lame, but I actually really liked it)

    THE CHAUFFEUR

    A VIEW TO A KILL

    ORDINARY WORLD

    SAVE A PRAYER

BEDROOM TOYS (I don't hate this song, but I would have preferred to hear other stuff instead)

    NOTORIUS

    NICE (I love this song)

    REFLEX

CARELESS MEMORIES (I think this song was the best of the night.)

WILD BOYS (This was good, but I swear when they did it at the last DC show it seemed more powerful)

    WHITE LINES (Double ugh!)

GIRLS ON FILM (I think this is when they introduced the band. After Simon built up John as the best/funkiest bass player in the world John played the lamest solo ever. Andy H and Andy T were the only ones who really did anything during their solos.)

    RIO

Here's my gripe (other than their lack of enthusiasm on stage)... Duran Duran has more than enough songs of their own without playing crappy covers of other songs. And I'd take almost any of D2's songs over White Lines or We Are Family. Especially when they didn't play things like "Want You More" or any rare stuff. I guess the earlier tour last year was for the early and rare songs. I'm glad I got to see them live then.
    • wow....sounds like your show wasn't nearly as good as the ones on the West coast....bummer! and I'm sorry, but Simon ain't Bono, so he should just shut his damn trap! Lordy!

Yeah in retrospect I could have done without several of the songs, like White Lines, Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, and even Reflex. Unfortunately, any band that's been around as long as they have and has such a huge body of work has to still whip out the "hits" to appease the not-so-rabid fans. I wish bands like that would play 2 shows on each tour stop: One for the hardcore fans who want to hear songs like Faster Than light or Sound of Thunder or Late Bar, etc., and one for the fans who want to only hear the above mentioned hit songs. I saw U2 last night and I wasn't too excited about the setlist. they did play a couple of older more obscure songs but how many times do we need to hear New Year's Day?

Speaking of, the Pixies are doing just that! they've just added a couple shows in Portland and here in SF where they'll be doing 2 shows in ONE night! the early show will be for B-Sides and rarities, the later show for the "hits"! NICE!
      • Unsu...

Bummer about the VA show. That kinda sucks.

I could have done without hearing Wild Boys! Hehe! Wow, a show with rarities and B-sides!!! Now THAT would be oh so cool!!!

I saw U2 on Saturday night. I thought the setlist was OK.

That sounds pretty cool what the Pixies are doing.
        • yeah U2 was okay (there were a LOT of songs I would have loved to have heard) but definitely not my favorite tour of theirs.....and that crowd-YUCK!
